Wings of Power celebrating 23 years in the Community

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Wings of Power, they have been a staple of the community celebrating 23 years as a family resource centre in Powerview-Pine Falls. They serve the local area from the Beaches, Sagkeeng, St George, Great Falls and up to Black River, Manigotagan and Hollowwater.

Wings of Power started at Ecole Powerview School in 1997 to address the need to help children entering kindergarten with their school readiness skills. They moved to their current location in Pine Falls in June of 1998 and expanded to a full time Parent-Child resource centre. In the new larger location, wings quickly expanded to include a breakfast program, children’s play groups a thrift store, Prenatal programming and so much more.

Wings of Power now looks nothing like it did in 1998. They are situated in the old Catholic church at 39 Pine Street in Pine Falls. The Catholic church sold the building and the Manse to Wings for $1 in 2003, on the condition that it would remain a non-profit, serving children and families in the area. Both buildings have had extensive overhauls the past 20 years, including new flooring, windows, shingles, paint, new furnace, new lighting, kitchen renos, insulation upgrades and remodeling. Wings of Power began with a single grant from the province and a staff of 2. Today they have a staff of 12 Full time and 8 Part time and have over 20 community partners.

Wings wears many hats in the community and offers many programs and services. Our Little Wings Pre school is still in operation, we operate Little Wings preschool out of Ecole Powerview school. We have a 3yr old morning program and a 4 yr old afternoon program. Our program is very successful thanks to our partnership with Sunrise School Division. We are also the granting partner for the breakfast program at Ecole Powerview School. All kids’ kindergarten to grade 8 have daily access to fruit, milk, cheese and hardboiled eggs.

Our main building, at 39 Pine Street in Pine Falls is host to our Canadian Prenatal Nutrition Program. This program runs weekly throughout the year and helps prepare mothers to be and new moms with valuable information and advice on how to care for and raise healthy happy children. Wings is also host to 2 parenting programs, Nobody’s Perfect and Circle of Security. These classes are offered twice per year and are free to all community members. We offer summer kids camp programming for all boys and girls aged 6-10 yrs. This is an 8-week program in July and August of each year.

We facilitate a Mini Chefs cooking program in partnership with Ecole Powerview School. These classes are open to kids aged 8-12. We host 4 annual community events which include our Canada Day Celebration, Farewell to summer BBQ in August, Fall Harvest Dinner in early October and Breakfast with Santa in early December. All events are free to attend and include a meal and door prizes.

Wings now has 3 community gardens planted, maintained and harvested by our staff and clients. All of our produce is used in our programs, Harvest Dinner or given to community members who shop in our Thrift Store. Our Thrift store is a key resource for those community members looking for inexpensive household items. Wings has 2 large donation bins out front, where we receive donations of any gently used household items. These include clothing, jackets, footwear, pots and pans, cutlery, dishes, glasses, bedding, kids clothing, toys, beds, dressers, appliances, tables and chairs. Basically, anything you have in your home that you no longer use or need, we will take. We receive over 2500 bags of donations or items annually. All clothing and smaller items are sold for #1 each. Large items are sold at a price according to their condition. Anything that we cannot sell is donated to Canadian Diabetes.

Another significant service we offer is our Helping Hands adult day program. Currently we have 7 local adults with disabilities who work with us daily. These individuals, with their support worker, volunteer at over 20 local businesses and organizations. Our clients deliver the breakfast program food to the school, help clean the Powerview Catholic Church, stock shelves at grocery stores, do dishes at restaurants and fold laundry and clear snow at the Hospital to only name a few. With so many partners in the community we can offer these young adults a daily routine where we teach them life skills, offer companionship and provide a safe, inviting place for them to spend their time. Wings is also fortunate to be able to provide a home for 3 of our young men. In 2012 we purchased a home in Pine Falls, where three of them reside. When not at Wings they have 24/7 support staff who ensure they are safe at all times and guide them in their daily journey through life. Having the local home enables these young men the ability to live in the community where they were born. If not for this opportunity they would have to live in a group home in Winnipeg away from their family and friends.

Wings of Power is a non profit organization with a Board of Directors consisting of 6 community members. They operate on grants from the Department of Families, Community Living and Disability Services Eastman, Child Day Care Province of Manitoba, Healthy Child Manitoba, Breakfast Club of Canada, Bright Beginnings Parent Child Coalition, Healthy Together Now, Building Sustainable Communities, Manitoba Metis Federation, Canada Summer Jobs, RM of Alexander, Pine Falls District Health Foundation, Manitoba Egg Producers, and donations from the community as well as Parishes from the Beaches.
