The Rural Municipality of Lac du Bonnet has launched a survey to determine the level of support residents have for the RM to conduct an amalgamation fact-finding study, and is seeking your feedback.
Council of the Rural Municipality of Lac du Bonnet has, for a number of years, expressed the view that an amalgamation of the RM and the Town of Lac du Bonnet has the potential to provide operational efficiencies, improved services, and economic benefits that would enhance the delivery of municipal services to the ratepayers of the amalgamated municipality.
RM Council views amalgamation as the future of local government in general, and as a logical endeavor in light of the RM and Town’s many shared services, interests, and jointly-funded programs.
Over the past number of months, Reeve Loren Schinkel and RM Councillors have had numerous informal discussions with residents of both the RM and Town who are interested in and see a need for amalgamation. Council members have been approached in person and have received many phone calls as well.
Consultation with, and input from, local residents is key when examining the topic of amalgamation. In this regard, Council desires your feedback and kindly asks you take a few minutes to fill out the survey and provide your thoughts on the matter.
Respondents may participate in the survey:
- Online on SurveyMonkey by visiting www.rmoflacdubonnet.com/p/amalgamation-survey,
- by printing off a PDF survey — available by following the same above link — and mailing the completed survey to Box 100, Lac du Bonnet, MB, R0E 1A0,
- or by printing off a PDF survey and dropping off the completed survey at the RM Administration Office’s drop-box.
Paper copies of the survey will also be available at local businesses and at the RM Administration Office upon reopening to the public.
All residents of the RM and Town of Lac du Bonnet, 18 years or older, are eligible to participate in the survey. Surveys must be completed and submitted by January 31, 2021 in order to be included in the Amalgamation study report.
The results of the survey will be shared by RM Council with the public and with Town Council. If the survey results indicate support for the commencement of an amalgamation study, the RM will move to the next step of the process and, in consultation with the Town, will create a detailed strategy regarding the activities required to further study amalgamation.
The RM reminded residents that the survey is not a vote for or against amalgamation. The information collected will be used to determine if a further examination of amalgamation should be conducted.
The Rural Municipality of Lac du Bonnet is also conducting a Recreational Needs and Facilities Assessment to better understand the current state of recreation services and facilities in the region. As engagement with the community is a critical aspect of the assessment, the RM is inviting area residents to participate in a fifteen-minute online survey. The survey deadline is Friday, Dec. 18, 2020. The information collected from residents and other stakeholder engagement conducted as part of the Recreational Needs and Facilities Assessment will help the project team to assess current recreation strengths and gaps. The results of the assessment will provide the RM with direction for facility renewal recommendations and recreation infrastructure, and will inform the RM’s long-term vision for recreation programming and future investment in the area.
