New Anicinabe Community School in Sagkeeng to be completed in 2020

On a chilly Tuesday afternoon, November 19, Chief Derrick Henderson, along with Sagkeeng educators and students joined in at the sod turning ceremony for the long-awaited Anishinabe Community School. The old school was damaged in a fire in 2012.
The $19 Million project will include 21 classrooms, a gymnasium, a library and an elder’s room. The construction is expected to be completed in 2020 in time for the 2020/2021 school year.
Chief Derek Henderson said there were a lot of memories in the old school for students and parents alike. “But now, with the reconstruction of the whole new school, it’ll be another era … for our community. So I’m very, very proud of that and very happy we can have this.”
