The Archers & Bowhunters Association of Manitoba is proud to be a part of the 2018 Manitoba Winter Games to be held in Thompson from March 4th to 7th. The games are an opportunity for selected sports to develop athletes who may eventually advance to higher levels of competition. After competing in the Manitoba games many athletes move on to become part of Team Manitoba and represent the Province at The Canada Games and other International Competitions.
The Pineview Saints Wilderness Adventures Club is proud to be sending six athletes to this year’s games. Each region of the province is allowed eight archery athletes. They have to be 16 years old or under. We are allowed two archers in each of the four equipment divisions.
region from our club are:
• Zachary Coss (coumpond bow)
• Jolene McKay (recurve bow)
• Elizabeth Phillips (recurve bow).
Representing other regions:
• Clayton Jasper (recurve bow) shooting for South region.
• Ethan Coss (Coumpound bow) shooting for West region.
• Trinity Kleyh (recurve bow) shooting for Winnipeg gold region.
The rest of our Eastman team is Declan Garvie, (recurve) Collin Fox, (compound) Jenna Tokariwski (compound) Ryder Wilson (recurve) and Taylor Klimchuk, (coumpond) Our archers have been very busy preparing for the Games developing the skills necessary for competition. Most of our archers have had limited experience participating in competitive archery events. Getting ready for the Games means – going to qualifiers, getting and tuning the right equipment, fitting in extra practices and working with our coach from Selkirk Mike Fox. Mike has been coming out once a week to work with the team and helping to get the needed equipment.
It has been a very steep learning curve so far and the next few weeks will be a busy time in the countdown to the games. To the archers for their willingness to put in all the hard work to prepare. Especially Jolene, Trinity and Clayton, for switching bow styles and shooting for other regions in order to be eligible.
With the help of Manager Bernice Phillips and other local supporters, including Trisha Dube (École Communautaire St-Georges) who provides our wonderful space, as well as Raymond Berthelette, Mike Boulet and Tom Paukovic who coach and help with equipment. We hope to be ready and have a wonderful experience at the games!
