Meet the candidates for Reeve of Victoria Beach

The Advocate invited all the candidates for this month’s Victoria Beach municipal elections to answer a short questionnaire regarding their campaign and goals as a councillor. All of the candidates were allowed 400 words to answer the questions. Some answered in bullet points, some went a little off script but each of these write-ups should give voters a better understanding of the candidate and their reasons for running. Two candidates (Irwin Kumka and Brad Enfield) did not respond to the request.

Are you a permanent resident?
I am a summer resident however my cottage is completely winterized and I spend plenty of time in the municipality all year round.
What experience do you bring to the table that will improve council?
I bring 8 years of experience as a Councillor for the RMVB. My relationships and interactions with our summer and permanent communities, our employees and volunteers have enabled me to gain insight into the areas and issues of our diverse community. Our community deserves strong leadership and a cohesive Council that can make fact-based decisions by consensus. My history in the community and on Council allows me to bring important background information and continuity to what will be a completely new group of Councillors.

What is your connection to the community?
My husband’s family spent their summers here from the early 1960’s and our own family since 1989. I volunteered for 16 years with the summer VB Club as membership coordinator, events convenor, Vice-President and President. I’m an active volunteer in the year-round VB Sports Centre. I was Chair of the VB Police Board for 4 years, served on the Community Accessibility Committee, participated in the Shoreline Advisory Committee, am spear-heading the RMVB 100th Anniversary Celebration (2019).

Are you involved in any community organizations ?
On behalf of the RMVB Council I am on the Board of the Red River Basin Commission-North Chapter, the NorthEastman Community Health Committee and I have attended the NorthEastman Community Forums and was a member of the Manitoba Model Forest. I also attend the Association of Manitoba Municipality conferences and district meetings.

What accomplishments would you like to achieve in your four years ?
The list is lengthy but for starters, along with the new Council I would like to cooperatively and fiscally accomplish the dike project to protect our residents in Albert Beach, complete our Zoning By-Law, implement accessibility standards, continue work on our 100th Anniversary in 2019 and work to improve resident, employee and volunteer relationships.
