In a press release on June 28th, 2018, the Manitoba Lacrosse Association proudly announced the selection of coach Ian Magnan to the Team Manitoba U15 Field Lacrosse Program who will compete for the Alumni Cup in Oshawa, Ontario from August 30th to September 2nd, 2018.
Magnan, who’s brother Luc currently plays for the Rochester Nighthawks of the National Lacrosse League, has an extensive playing, coaching, and volunteer experience in the province of Manitoba, which propelled him to play at Lynn University. Magnan added Larry Sharpe and Dallas Courchene to his coaching staff, the former of whom has headed the Powerview Pacers in the Manitoba High School Field Lacrosse League since 2004.
Of the 20 athletes who made the team, 10 are from the Powerview-Pine Falls, St-Georges, and Sagkeeng First Nation communities. They are, in no particular order, Anthony Bruyere, Tanner Amos, Carter Courchene, Quinn Reid, Connor Courchene, Nathan Johnson, Lyle Guimond, Ryan Dupont, Ryland Schroeder, and Manny Canard.
Due to the large contingent of locals, both on the coaching staff and roster, all tryouts and practices were and are located at Powerview School. The team currently practices on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:00 pm.
While the Manitoba Lacrosse Association provides funding for the tournament entry fee, they do not help with travel expenses, and thus, the team is currently in full fledge fundraising mode. They have undertaken a number of initiatives, namely a weekly meat draw on Wing Night Wednesdays at the Papertown Motor Inn.
For those of us who enjoy golfing, the team is putting on a fundraising golf tournament on Sunday, August 19th, 2018 at the Pine Falls Golf Club. Green Fees have been generously waived for the tournament, and so the entire $40 entry fee will go directly to the team. The team has received an outpouring of support from local businesses who provided prizes for the tournament. The foremost of which being a 2018 Honda ATV from St. Croix Cycle, which can be won by getting a hole in one on the par-3, 6th hole. Register for the tournament by calling the Pine Falls Golf Club at 204-367-8463. I urge all local golfers to come out and support this wonderful cause!
