  1. What do you cherish most about this community?

Answer:

This is a difficult question to answer, not because I have nothing to say, but because I don’t know where to start.  With a young family there is no other community I can think of that I would rather raise a family in than right here.  Spend some time outside any public place in this R.M. and you will run into someone who asks you about your day, or gives you a wave and a friendly smile in passing.  Whether you were born here, rent here, or moved here if you spend any time here you will find out that this community is friendly, welcoming, and inviting, qualities that in this day and age are getting harder and harder to find in communities.

  1. Help us understand the type of leader you will be?

Answer:

I believe that when a person is elected by their constituents that they are elected to represent everyone in their ward to the best of their abilities.  This is something I feel our governments need to strive for today now more than ever.  If elected this is something I will strive for, our Municipal government needs to make it a priority to act on the interests of the people that elected us into office and not what is in our own personal interests.  If elected I am encouraging my constituents to contact me anyway possible and let me know what I can do for them as an elected official, and how I can best represent them at our council meeting, after all that is what an elected representative is for, to represent the people!

  1. What are your highest priorities for change in our municipality,
    – in the short term?

Answer:

First and foremost our Fire Department and Policing in Ward 1.  Currently our Fire Department is located in the RM of Victoria Beach.   Currently the RM of Alexander pays for their services but has no say in the operations of the Fire Department.  As many of you know an issue arose this summer where the previous RM of Victoria Beach Council had a conflict with the Fire Department almost leaving many of us facing the possibility of not having adequate coverage from the Fire Department, which would jeopardise our home insurance.  If elected I would like to sit down with the RM of Victoria Beach Council and work out an agreement to share the responsibilities of the Fire Department to ensure nothing like what took place can happen again.  As for policing many people in Ward 1 have faced break and enters in Ward 1, my family included.  I would fight to see a greater police present in the area no one should feel unsafe in their home or cottage.
– in the long term?

Answer:

Economic development is my long term priority.  Currently Ward 1 and 2 have limited employment opportunities.  The majority of services are retail and contracting services which in many cases are seasonal only employment opportunities.  If elected I would like to develop an economic development plan to create jobs and bring in new revenue streams to our municipality, improving the quality of services the RM can provide as well as bringing new families to the area.

  1. What are the biggest fiscal challenges in our municipality, and what do you envision as the best way(s) to address them?

Answer:

The lack of provincial funding for the size of our municipality is undoubtedly the biggest challenge we face.  The RM of Alexander is a large municipality with many diverse communities located within its borders with many diverse needs.  If elected I would push for an in-depth audit of how we have previously allocated our funds and see how we can be more financially responsible.  This audit would aid council to develop a strategic plan to find areas where we can cut costs, while increasing services to our citizens, while NOT increasing taxes.

  1. Would you advocate for any changes to the current boundaries of the municipality (for example through annexation, amalgamation, secession).

Answer:

As I stated in my response to question 2, if elected I will represent the interests of my constituents. Any changes to the borders of our municipality is something that needs to be done through consultations, surveys, and public forums where the citizens have many opportunities to express their thoughts, feelings, and concerns on the issue.  This is not something that should be done without lots of discussions and input from the community.  Ultimately if a change to the borders were to be propos, I would fight to see the citizens vote on the issue in a referendum as opposed to the 5 people on council voting on this issue alone.

  1. Where is your permanent residence?

Answer:

Traverse Bay MB.  I have been a resident of the community for 8 years.

  1. Have you served on a municipal council before? If so, if so, reeve, mayor or councillor?

Answer:

This is my first time allowing my name to stand for council.

  1. Please list any life/work/volunteer experience that is pertinent to the position you are seeking?

Answer:

I have a professional background in finances which will assist me in helping council develop a strategic plan to cut costs and finding new revenue streams for the municipality.  I have been on several boards in my past.  Starting with the Pinawa Curling Club Vice president (2008-2010), Chair of the Victoria Beach Metis Local (2010-2018), Board of Director of the Victoria Beach Community Center (2017-2018).  I have a passion for helping my community and that is my goal with allowing my name to stand in this election, I want to help this community in every aspect possible.
