On Friday, January 11th, Sagkeeng Arena hosted a Winnipeg Bantam AAA Division 1 game between the Eastman Selects and the Interlake Lightning. The game featured two players hailing from Sagkeeng, twins Carter and Connor Courchene, who both played for the Sagkeeng Hawks AA Bantam team last season. The two boys made the Eastman Selects AAA Bantam squad this season, after being cut last year.
The Interlake Lighting’s Brayden Stevenson opened the scoring five minutes into the game. A few minutes later, aforementioned local boy Carter Courchene got the crowd on its feet when he tied the game on an unassisted goal. Eastman Selects points leader Denton Mateychuk then scored less than a minute later to give the Selects a 2-1 lead.
They maintained this lead until five minutes into the second period, when Ty Woods tied it up for the lightning. Kayden McMahon then gave the Lightning a 3-2 lead with a powerplay marker late in the penalty filled second frame.
The Lightning would hold on for the 3-2 victory, largely on the back of goaltender Dawson Cowan, who finished with 34 saves on 36 shots for a sterling .944 save percentage. The Selects peppered the Lightning netminder in the 3rd, but could not find the twine.
