Victoria Beach Annual May Long Weekend Co-ed Slo-Pitch Baseball Tournament

By Vince Clark

This past weekend, on May 19th and 20th, 2018, the long-standing Victoria Beach Annual May Long Weekend Slo-Pitch Baseball Tournament took place jointly at the Victoria Beach Sports Club baseball diamond, and the Victoria Beach Yacht Club Baseball Diamond. Fifteen teams entered, Poppers, Glassmen, Oji-Cree, Beach Bandits, Nault Assault, Scared Hitless, Bad News Bears, Rez ee Rexion, Basic Pitches, Alcoballics, Moore Errors, We Got the Runs, Ballz Deep, Transcona Classics, and Brew Crew.

When the dust settled on the round robin, it was Nault Assault and Alcoballics, who were set to play for the A-Side championship. Nault Assault, comprised largely of members of the Nault family, from St-Georges, were the favorites coming in, having swept their round robin games, albeit by slim margins of 9-7, 9-7 and 9-8. After exchanging blows for the first 5 innings, including a combined 7 home runs, Nault Assault led 10-9. The Alcobalics proved to be too much however, as they put up 5 runs in both the 6th and 7th innings, largely due to a couple of defensive errors by Nault Assault, the largest of which being a throwing error on a tailor-made double play, which would have gotten them out of the 6th inning unscathed. Now down 19-11, Nault Assault went three up, three down in the bottom of the 7th, and the Alcoballics, comprised of players from Sagkeeng First Nation, including Nodin Abraham and Aaron Courchene, celebrated their championship victory.

The B-Side championship was much less eventful, as Moore Errors beat Scared Hitless in a landslide.

All in all, the tournament was excellently organized, and all the participants enjoyed the all too rare sunny May long weekend weather.
