Beginning with the Maskwa Snowmobile Club Poker Derby on Saturday, February 10th, this year WinterFest had its last event on Wednesday, February 21st. The festival consisted of several events, ranging from the aforementioned poker derby, to horse-drawn sleigh rides at the Village Green, to an open pool day at the Papertown Motor Inn. One particularly notable event was the dazzling fireworks display, taking place on the evening of Saturday, February 17th. Attendees have stated that it was one of the best local fireworks shows in years.
One other notable event was the 2nd Annual Winterfest Classic Hockey Game. Last year it featured the St-Georges Voyageurs vs the Pine Falls Ol’ Kings. This year however, a new local womens team took on the Ol’ Kings. The game featured several fundraising efforts from the pineview hockey association. There was a 2nd Intermission sponge-puck toss, where youths pay a loonie per puck and line up in one of the team benches, then everyone attempts to land their puck on the centre ice dot, closest too it wins. There was also Loonie penalties, wherein you spend a dollar to put a player of your choosing in the penalty box for 2 minutes. The game was also preceded with a youth hockey scrimmage involving several local teams.
All in all, the annual Winterfest was a tremendous success and locals are already eagerly anticipating next years festival.
